Accident at Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Expansion Project

Mumbai: The girder of the flyover in the Santacruz-Chembur link road extension suddenly collapsed around 4.30 am on Friday. Fourteen people were injured in the accident. The accident happened near the trade center. Upon receiving the information about the accident, the local police and fire brigade immediately rushed to the spot and took rescue work. Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s V. on all the injured. N. Desai was treated at the hospital. Most of them suffered minor beatings. N. Doctors at Desai Hospital said.

Expansion of Santacruz-Chembur link road is underway through Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The girder of a flyover at MTNL Junction suddenly collapsed on Friday morning. With that came a loud noise. Some of the approximately 25 construction workers jumped off the bridge to save their lives as the girder collapsed. So some fell into the water tank. A total of 14 people were injured in the incident. Thirteen people sustained minor injuries and were released after receiving first aid, while one sustained a head injury. No workers were trapped under the girder, a police official said.

The accident will be investigated by an independent three-member committee and a report will be submitted within 15 days. The MMRDA said strict action would be taken against the culprits. Police, fire brigade and MMRDA officials are investigating why and how the accident happened and who is responsible for it.

Opposition leaders demand an impartial inquiry

Mumbai: A large number of projects are being carried out at various places in Mumbai at present and no matter what the new project is, the same contractors and the same officials are seen working in concert. This has increased the insecurity among the contractors. Opposition leader Praveen Darekar has asked how the contracts are awarded to the companies which are under investigation by the ED and CBI and are on the black list. Darekar has demanded an impartial inquiry into the accident from Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde and MMRDA Commissioner.

The accident happened on Friday morning. Opposition leader Darekar visited the spot and inspected it. In this regard, he said that the accident was of a very serious nature and the contractor J. Kumar was responsible for the use of proper machinery while working on the girder, whether it was usable, safety measures for the workers and engineers at the work site. Darekar asked whether officers and senior engineers were present and who was responsible for the accident.
