Adults have right to choose spouse irrespective of religion: Allahabad High Court

Two adults have the right to choose who they want to deal with, regardless of their religion. This was stated by the Allahabad High Court while protecting an inter-religious couple. A bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Gupta and Deepak Verma passed the order. The petitioner’s son is a Hindu and the daughter is a Muslim. The girl’s family is allowed to marry. The boy’s mother is also ready for marriage, but his father does not approve of the marriage. Both of them had sought protection from the court, saying their lives could be in danger in the future.

The bench said, “Even the parents of two adults cannot object to their relationship. Although they have different religions, they have the right to choose a marriage mate and this cannot be disputed. In our view, no one, not even their parents, can object to their relationship, ”the bar and the bench told the court on Thursday. Shifa Hassan, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, and her partner had filed a joint petition in the court. The two are said to be in love with each other and living together as they wish.

Shifa Hassan said in the petition that she had also filed an application for conversion from Muslim to Hindu. After that, the district magistrate had called for a report from the concerned police station. In the petition, Hassan has said that her father has a salary for the marriage. The child’s mother is also allowing the marriage. However, the boy’s father is not ready for the marriage. So their lives are in danger. During the hearing, the court granted protection to the petitioners. The court also said that they have full right to choose their own spouse. The court has directed the police to ensure that the petitioners are not harassed by any person.
