Appointment to three posts of Information Commissioner after three years

64,000 appeals pending with State Commission

Mumbai: The government on Friday appointed Suresh Chandra Garola, Sameer Sahay and Rahul Pandey as state information commissioners after RTI activists in the state warned them to pursue K Lela and go to court. Suresh Chandra Garola is a retired officer of the Indian Forest Service and Rahul Pandey is a journalist from Nagpur.

The state has seven Chief Information Commissioners and under them seven Information Commissioners namely Mumbai, Konkan, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, Amravati and Nagpur. However, Nagpur, Amravati, Konkan and Aurangabad have been vacant for the last three years. Therefore, the present three Commissioners have been given additional charge of other departments. As a result, the number of second appeals in the state has gone up to 64,000, of which 10,000 are pending in Aurangabad, 8,500 in Amravati division, 17,000 in Pune and 8,000 in Mumbai. A total of 12,000 complaint forms are pending with the Information Commissioner. It is alleged that due to government apathy, the right to information is not being implemented effectively in the state.
