CCTV is now watching Kandalvana

 

Mumbai: The decision to set up a CCTV system to curb encroachments on the Kandal forest in the Mumbai metropolitan area was taken at a meeting of the State Kandal Forest and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Regulatory Board chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday. Accordingly, a total of 279 CCTV cameras will be installed in 106 sensitive places in the Mumbai metropolitan area at a cost of Rs 35 crore. In the first phase, these cameras will be installed in Bhiwandi, in the second phase in West and Central Mumbai and in the third phase in Navi Mumbai and Thane Bay Flamingo Sanctuary.

The meeting was attended by Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray, MLA Vaibhav Naik, Principal Secretary Environment Manisha Mhaiskar, Principal Secretary Forest Venugopal Reddy, Executive Director Kandalvan Pratishthan Virendra Tiwari, members of the Board of Governors of Maharashtra Kandalvan and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, senior officials of Forest Department.

In order to save Kandalvan, a large scale public awareness should be created and Kandalvan should be planted, said the Chief Minister. He also said that the nature areas being developed by the Kandlavan Pratishthan, Thane Bay Flamingo Sanctuary and other activities should be promoted to reach more people.

The meeting also approved a proposal by the Bombay Natural History Society to study the migratory routes of coastal migratory birds. The duration of this project is five years. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Kandlavan Foundation and the Bombay Natural History Society. The meeting approved the budget of Rs. 30 crore for Kandalvan Pratishthan for 2021-22 and the expenditure of Rs. 25 crore for various activities implemented by Kandalvan Pratishthan.

Research and Training Center

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has provided Rs. 10 crore for setting up of Kandalvan Research and Training Center. Out of this, Kandalvan Research and Training Center is being set up at Bhakti Park, Wadala. For that, Ms. Tandon Urban Solutions Pvt. Ltd. This company was selected.
