Charanjit Singh Channy sworn in as Punjab Chief Minister
Charanjit Singh Channy has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Charanjit Singh Channy has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab. He was administered the oath of office by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit. The swearing in ceremony is underway at Raj Bhavan. Apart from Channy, Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit has administered the oath of office to Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is present at the swearing-in ceremony. Along with Rahul Gandhi, Congress state president Navjot Singh Sidhu met Channy and wished him well after taking oath.
Charanjit Singh Channy’s name was announced for the Chief Minister’s post on Saturday after the resignation of Capt Amarinder Singh. After a day-long meeting on Sunday, Charanjit Singh Channy’s name was sealed by the Congress High Command. Channy has become the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab.

The names of Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Navjyot Singh Sidhu and Sunil Jakhar were discussed for the post of Chief Minister of Punjab. The most talked about name was Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. However, the Congress has given a chance to Charanjit Singh Channy, a Dalit leader from Punjab, to become the Chief Minister.

Charanjit Singh Channy was the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly when the Akali Dal and the BJP were in power in the state. He is the MLA of Chamkaur Sahib constituency and as the Minister he was in charge of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Employment Generation and Training and Tourism and Culture Affairs.
