Dawood Gang financier Yusuf Lakdawala dies in Arthur Road Jail

Yusuf Lakdawala, a builder, film financier from Bollywood and financier of Dawood Gang, has died in Arthur Road Jail. He was pronounced dead at 12 noon today. Lakdawala was arrested by the ED for land grabbing.

Yusuf Lakdawala was diagnosed with cancer and was admitted to the jail hospital on September 6. Prison officials said 76-year-old Yusuf Lakdawala was suffering from cancer. He was shifted to JJ Hospital on Wednesday morning. The hospital today (Thursday) reported the death of Yusuf Lakdawala, the Indian Express reported.

The ED had taken action against Yusuf Lakdawala in a financial malpractice case. Yusuf Lakdawala was accused of embezzling Rs 50 crore. He was also charged with fraud, misconduct and illegal land grabbing. He was accused of illegally looting land in Khandala owned by the descendants of Nawab Himayat Nawaz Jung Bahadur of Hyderabad. The ED had produced him in the local court in this case. He was then remanded in ED custody till June 2.

The ED had said that Lakdawala had paid a bribe of Rs 11.5 crore to government officials to get the land in Khandala owned by the descendants of Nawab Himayat Nawaz Jung Bahadur of Hyderabad. Lakdawala handed over the land to his father M. A. Lakdawala had bought it in 1949 and later in 1968 he got the documents showing that it was done in his name. The ED had also alleged that Lakdawala had tried to destroy the original documents of the Lonavla registration office.
