Dr. T. Padmanabhan

Among the scientists doing basic work in theoretical physics, Pvt. Thanu Padmanabhan was among them. His discoveries made him known to astronomers around the world. Padmanabhan passed away recently. Until the end, he was a distinguished professor at the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics. In the commissioner’s circle, he was known as Paddy. He has researched and written more than 300 research papers on a wide range of topics in physics such as cosmology, mass physics, gravity. He tried to look at science and the history of science in book form. His books are easy to understand. Scientists around the world have referenced their research sixteen thousand times to date. He also produced good students. A total of 18 people became Vidyavachaspati under his guidance. Dr. He worked with Jayant Narlikar. He used Narlikar’s knack of simplifying scientific concepts in simple language. In solving many difficult questions, he tried to combine relativity and mass physics at the theoretical level. M.Sc. from King’s University College, Kerala. After graduation, he started working at Tata Basic Research Institute. Later Dr. Pvt. Jayant Narlikar was his guide at that time. While doing research on mass cosmology, he started teaching at Tata Basic Research Institute in 1980. He was there till 1992, later he came to Pune for ‘Ayuka’. He also taught at Eiser Mohali, Eiser Pune, Raman Institute, Bangalore, Harishchandra Research Institute, Allahabad. He used to give lectures in many institutions abroad. That included Princeton. In 2007, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in Science and Engineering. He received many honors like Shantiswarup Bhatnagar Award, Infosys Science Award, Birla Award, Goyal Award, Insa Young Scientist Award. Padmanabhan chaired the International Astronomical Union’s Department of Cosmology from 2009 to 2012.
