Election Commission issues notice to Priyanka Tibrewal

BJP candidate from Bhawanipur

The Election Commission (EC) has issued a show cause notice to Priyanka Tibrewal, a BJP candidate from West Bengal’s Bhawanipur constituency, for allegedly violating the election code of conduct by gathering a large crowd of her supporters while filing her nomination papers.

The Trinamool Congress has accused Tibrewal of violating the code of conduct and coroner’s guidelines by gathering an “uncontrolled crowd” of at least 500 people. According to the complaint, Priyanka used to perform the traditional Bengali dance ‘Dhunuchi Nach’, which is usually performed during the Durga Puja festival, on her way to file her nomination papers. The notice issued by the election officials also mentioned the report submitted by the in-charge of Bhawanipur police station regarding the traffic jam caused by the large number of BJP supporters gathering at Shambhunath Pandit Marg and other places.

Priyanka Tibrewal, however, denied the allegations and said that she would respond to whatever she had to say.

The Trinamool Congress is scared of contesting the by-elections on September 30 and has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission to stop its campaign, Tibrewal claimed on Wednesday.
