Former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes dies

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes has died. He was 80 years old. He has been ill for the last several days and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangalore. However, he lost his life during the treatment. Oscar Fernandes was the Minister of Roads and Transport during the UPA government. He is currently a Rajya Sabha MP. Oscar Fernandes, a minister in the UPA government, had been working with the Gandhi family for a long time. Oscar Fernandes was one of the close associates of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. He was Rajiv Gandhi’s parliamentary secretary.

Oscar Fernandes underwent brain surgery in July this year. He was then in a coma. Oscar Fernandes suffered a head injury while practicing yoga. He was hospitalized after falling down and injuring his head while doing yoga at home. The Congress party has tweeted condolences over the death of former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes.

Oscar Fernandes was born on March 27, 1941 in Udappi, Karnataka. In 1980, he was elected as an MP from Udapi Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka. He was elected consecutively till 1996. Then in 1998, the Congress sent him to the Rajya Sabha. He has been a Member of the Rajya Sabha ever since.
