Penguin increased the revenue of the municipality

Additional income of Rs. 12 crore to the zoo

Mumbai: The municipal administration has claimed that the income of Veermata Jijabai Bhosale zoo and park (Ranichi Bagh) in Byculla has increased since the arrival of penguins. According to the administration, since the arrival of the penguins, the municipality has received an additional revenue of Rs 12 crore since 2017. The administration also said that there was no fact in the allegation that the penguins were causing financial loss to the municipality.

The corporation has invited tenders for the maintenance of penguins for the next three years at a cost of Rs 15 crore. From that, BJP and Congress have targeted the ruling Shiv Sena and the municipal administration. Both the parties have criticized the expenditure of Rs 15 crore as a loss to the municipality. Criticism has also been leveled that it is not appropriate to spend so much on penguins when the municipality’s income is sinking. BJP corporator K Lee had criticized the maintenance of penguins during the lockout period as being like feeding a white elephant. However, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has claimed that the penguins have earned crores of rupees.

The annual income before the arrival of penguins in the Queen’s Garden was within one crore rupees. In the three years from 2014 to 2017, the total income was Rs 2 crore 10 lakh. However, after the arrival of penguins, the total income of the municipality from April 2017 to March 2020 reached Rs 14.36 crore. In other words, the Municipal Commissioner claims that Penguin earned a net income of Rs 12.26 crore. The total cost of importing penguins was Rs 11.46 crore. The commissioner also claimed that the income was more than the cost of penguins.
