Rajni Patil Congress candidate for Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Congress has finally fielded Gandhian loyalist Rajni Patil for a seat in the state for the Rajya Sabha by-elections, the party’s Central Election Committee chief Mukul Wasnik announced on Monday. Voting for the six Rajya Sabha seats will be held on October 4 and Wednesday (September 22) is the last day for filing nominations.

Many aspirants in the state had tried to fill the vacancy left by the death of the late Congress leader Rajiv Satav. However, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has given Rajni Patil, in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir, a chance to be re-elected to the Rajya Sabha. After the death of Vilasrao Deshmukh in 2013, Rajni Patil was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Rajni Patil’s wish to be re-nominated in 2018 could not be fulfilled. Therefore, Sonia Gandhi herself had come to an understanding of the disgruntled Rajinikanth.

Rajiv Satav’s wife Pragya Satav was also being nominated for the Rajya Sabha seat. However, his region has been included in the executive. Apart from that, leaders like Prithviraj Chavan, Ramind Deora, Sanjay Nirupam were also interested. Rajni Patil was also included in the list of state-appointed members of the Legislative Council, but now he has been directly nominated for the Rajya Sabha. With the BJP announcing Sanjay Upadhyay’s candidature this time, the chances of Rajni Patil being elected unopposed have diminished.

Sonowal, Sushmita Dev in the ring

As expected, BJP has fielded Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam and Trinamool Congress has fielded Sushmita Deo from West Bengal. Trinamool Congress’ Aprita Ghosh has resigned from the Rajya Sabha in the rainy session. However, after the announcement of the by-election program for six seats, Ghosh resigned and new by-election dates for these seats will have to be announced. Ghosh will be replaced by Trinamool Congress vice-president Yashwant Sinha.
