Suicide due to corona should be considered as death due to Kovid-19: Supreme Court

The Corona virus has spread in the country for the last one and a half years and thousands of families have lost their loved ones. However, the subsequent death certificate has caused confusion about the mention of death by Corona. Therefore, there were difficulties in issuing these certificates to the relatives of the deceased in government offices or for other reasons. In this regard, the Supreme Court had on June 30 directed the Central Government to make the rules more flexible and simple. However, as no action was taken by the Center even after that, in the hearing held on September 3, the court asked the government to respond. After that, the central government has finally issued revised rules in this regard.

The apex court on Monday asked the Center to consider the suicide of Kovid-positive patients as a Kovid death case, so that their family members could be eligible for compensation. The reason is that the victim may have taken extreme measures due to covid infection, the court said.

A bench of Justice MR Shah said, “We have seen your affidavit, but there are some things that need to be considered further.” In the affidavit, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formulated guidelines on easy verification of people who have died due to covid. These instructions have been sent to the states. The directive stated that if death occurred due to poisoning or other accident, even if Covid 19 was one of the causes, it would not be considered as death due to Covid.

The court ruled that the death of a person who committed suicide by coronary heart disease was not acceptable. They should also get a certificate of death due to covid. The court said the government should issue new guidelines for the states on how to issue these certificates to cases which were earlier denied.

A petition seeking financial compensation was filed in the Supreme Court following the death caused by Corona. Following the hearing of the petition by the court to the Central Government, the Central Government and the ICMR have now jointly issued revised rules on the certificate of granting death to corona.

After the death of a person due to corona, it is necessary to provide government documents to his relatives as evidence. This would have made it easier for the relatives of the deceased to get the various documents handled by the concerned department in the municipality or other local offices, the court had said in its order regarding the rules. Accordingly, new regulations have been issued.
