Transformation in Rajasthan after Punjab ?; Discussions begin after marathon meetings between Rahul Gandhi and Sachin Pilot

The Congress, which has been battling infighting in Punjab for the past few months, has finally given a chance to new faces in the state. Charanjit Singh Channy was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab on Monday. Since then, with the completion of the Congress in Punjab, the party has begun efforts to resolve inter-party disputes in the ruling states. On September 17, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a marathon meeting with former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the situation in Rajasthan as well as the party’s goals for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The meeting took place a day before Capt Amarinder Singh resigned as Punjab Chief Minister. This was the first meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Sachin Pilot this year. Pilot was the President and Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan Congress till July 2020. However, after a revolt against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, both the posts were removed from him. Then again, during the meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Sachin Pilot, it is said that there was a serious discussion on party restructuring in Rajasthan.

Ajay Maken, the Congress general secretary in charge of Rajasthan, has paid several visits to Rajasthan and sought the views of all the MLAs. Pilot had repeatedly called on the High Command to reshuffle the cabinet and include some loyal MLAs and make political appointments in various boards and corporations in the state.

But despite several visits by Maken, things have not changed. The pilot has been reassured that changes will be made soon. After the decision in Punjab, Congress leaders in Rajasthan are expecting decisive intervention from the central leadership.

But a senior party leader said no major changes were expected in Rajasthan at present. He said the party’s entire focus is now on the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand. Elections will be held in all these states in the first six months of 2022.

While Sachin Pilot has not yet commented on the meeting, two other senior leaders said the Congress had kept in mind its goal of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as it reshuffled its state government.
