With the Gujarat Assembly elections a year away, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani resigned on Saturday. “I have voluntarily resigned due to the party’s decision in the wider interest of Gujarat,” Rupani said. Gujarat was preparing for a behind-the-scenes change of leadership, but no one had any idea that the BJP would decide to remove Vijay Rupani from the Chief Minister’s post so soon. After the resignation of Vijay Rupani as the Chief Minister, a decision will be taken today as to who will be in charge of Gujarat. The Gujarat BJP Legislative Party is likely to meet on Sunday to elect a new chief minister after Vijay Rupani resigned as chief minister.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the World Patidar Society’s Sardar Dham in Ahmedabad on Saturday, no one had any idea that Gujarat’s politics would change drastically. After arriving in Gandhinagar, BJP Union Minister BL Santosh called on state president CR Patil and state in-charge Ratnakar. Shortly afterwards, it came to light that Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel had gone to meet the Governor. After that, Vijay Rupani announced his resignation as the Chief Minister.

The Gujarat BJP Legislative Party is likely to meet on Sunday to elect a new chief minister after Vijay Rupani resigned as chief minister. Bharatiya Janata Party state spokesperson Yamal Vyas said Union Home Minister Amit Shah could attend the Legislative Party meeting with Union observers. Some Union ministers are also said to be in the running for the Gujarat chief ministership.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and Narendra Tomar will visit Gujarat as BJP’s central observers. All BJP MLAs will attend the meeting along with central observers. The name of the new Chief Minister will be decided in the meeting. Earlier, BL Santosh had met the party’s state president CR Patil, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, ministers Bhupendra Singh Chudasama and Pradeep Singh Jadeja, BJP state general secretary Pradeep Singh Waghela and Rajubhai Patel and the party’s chief whip in the assembly Pankaj Desai.

After the resignation of Vijay Rupani as the Chief Minister, many names are being discussed. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel is also in the running for the Chief Minister’s post. The names of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandvia and Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Purushottam Rupala are also being discussed. Apart from this, Praful Patel and Gordhan Jadafia are also in the race for the Chief Minister’s post.
