Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri’s audiotape was released on the twentieth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
The site’s intelligence group said in a statement that Zawahiri had been released on Saturday and would not be allowed to return to Jerusalem. He also praised the January attack on Russian forces in Syria.
Zawahiri has said that after 20 years, the United States has withdrawn its troops from Afghanistan. An agreement was reached with the Taliban in February 2020. Al-Zawahiri did not mention the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, but did mention the January 1 attack on Russian troops in Raqqa, northern Syria.
In 2020, there were rumors that al-Zawahiri had fallen ill and died. There was no video of him after that. But now a video has been released proving that he is alive.
Rita Katz, the site’s director, said he may have died. If so, he may have died after January 2021. Zawahiri’s speech is 61 minutes long and his Sahab Media Foundation has made this audio recording. Al Qaeda is currently being challenged by ISIS. ISIS has seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.
